Tomorrow, July 23, hip hop artist Nas is allegedly supposed to personally hand deliver a signed petition to Fox News at 2pm Eastern time. This according to politico Michael Calderone. According to Calderone, Nas wants the talking heads at Fox News to "stop its racist smears against the Obamas and other Black Americans." I can't say that I'm a fan of Nas, nor am I a fan of his music, but I must say I'm impressed with his move to take a stand. I guess time will tell what happens. Unfortunately that time is 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.... and unfortunately, I wasn't blessed with the gift of patience.

Reclaiming the Dream

Soledad O'Brien's in-depth look at being black in America. But, considering the economic times we're in, I needed to hear just what our "commander in chief" had to say. His response to all the major lenders going under, gas prices skyrocketing, homeowners forced to foreclose on their home and Americans having to alter their lifestyle just to stay alive, his only response: "We're in hard times." Really??? Why can't he just come out and call it what it really is. We're in a recession, damnit! Stop sugar-coating it, talking your way around it just to put us (the American people) at ease. Every time I listen to this man speak, not only do I cringe and get a pain in my stomach, I have to admit that I'm always amazed at how out of touch he is with the real world. Sure, I understand that he is the President of the United States, but he could really give a rat's a$$ about us-- I'll say it again, us-- the American public. No, George Bush just doesn't care about black people, George Bush doesn't care about any of us no matter what the hue of our skin, the religion we worship or ethnic group we belong. The man just doesn't care. He talked around every question every reporter asked and I don't believe he properly answered any one question. His excuse as to why we're in the predicament we're in: "it took some time to get in this situation... and it's going to take some time to get out of it." Hmmn... imagine that. So, what does "W" plan to do to get us out of this situation? Well, he has ordered congress to lift the ban on offshore drilling so that we will not have to rely on the Saudis and Chavez for our oil. Perhaps, just maybe gas prices will attempt to trickle down. What else is he planning to do? Um... nothing. Out of the one hour and thirty minutes (give or take), I did not hear any other resolution to our failing economy. He basically said, America, you're on your own. At least he complimented us and said that we are smart enough "... to know how to balance our checkbooks." Why thank you Mr. President. So, basically we will carry on just as we've been doing: filling our tanks half full, because we can't afford to fill our cars up anymore, turn our A/C off when we leave the house for a significant amount of time, drive less, and conserve. Well blow me down, because I did not need "W" to tell me something that I already know. Having said all that, W said that he's optimistic that the economy will turn around. Well, since I can't afford to take a vacation, or fill my tank up, or send my child to college (OK... I don't have a kid, but I empathize for those who do), the only thing I can afford to do is be optimistic.

'A Dream Deferred'

Was it so wrong for me to have just the slightest of an inkling of hope that America could be under the administration of the democratic party for the next four years? Was it wrong to finally believe that, yes, we could finally have our first black president? So much for that dream... it's festering like a sore and oozing down the drain. I won't go as far to blame the July 21st New Yorker cover, but I won't dismiss the fact that thanks to cartoonist Barry Blitt, a lot of misinformed American people are only going to see the cover and think, "I was right about Obama. He's a card-carrying, Bin-Laden loving Muslim." And what in the world is that image of Michelle all about. Is she supposed to be the "angry black women" that so many demure white women believe her to be? Again, misinformed America will not bother to read the 18-page article and they will not get the satiric message the cover is trying to convey. That's right, the editors of the New Yorker are saying that the cover is purely satire (what this country is based on). Funny, I thought this country is based on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Well, I for one totally know what satire is, and as I recall, satire is supposed to be funny and make one think. Well, I'm not laughing and I think this is the most offensive piece of garbage I've laid my eyes on all month. But, it is only the middle of July and there's still a little more than three months left until election day. My guess is it only gets worse from here on out. I wonder which editor at the New Yorker is also a paid member of John McCain's campaign. Because whether or not the New Yorker is a magazine that is predominantly read by liberals, you can best believe now more right wingers will be picking up a copy at their local newsstand now. (Shaking my head in utter disgust!) But, still, the naive little girl in me still believes that a change will come... someday. It may not be today, tomorrow, or hell November 4th... but someday. Without hope, we've got nothing... So, keep hope alive!

'God Don't Like Ugly...'

... Talk about somone whose head has gotten way too big for her body. Fans of the hit ABC drama series will recall the new bride recently pulled herself out of the running for this year's Emmy award race for best-supporting actress in a television drama. Her reason, because she didn't think the writers wrote good material for her character, Izzie Stevens last season. Can you say ungrateful Bi-otch?!!

According to a source, Grey's creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, is P-O'd! And, she wants to kill Izzie's character. That's right, graveyard dead. Other speculation is that Heigl wants out of her contract to pursue other big screen possibilities because some consider her Hollywood's new "It Girl." I'm sighing as I write this. Every one's entitled to their own opinion, right?

So, I guess we'll find out if Izzie will see the "on-screen" light come October. She used to be my favorite character on the show, now I just want the bi%&@ gone. I tell you what, today could not have gotten here fast enough. I'm just plain 'ole tired, sleep deprived and weary. I'm in a great mood, despite having no energy at the moment, but the subject matter of this entry, unfortunately, does not reflect my mood.

I know everyone has read and heard the idiotic remarks spoken by the sacrilegious Jesse Jackson (I'm being nice)... so I won't go into it today. Besides, I'm about a day late and dollar short with that one. But, there is an article written by The Root blogger, Keith Josef Adkins. It's beautifully written and it totally made me think, so check it out if you haven't already. In the article he touches upon how the black community's dirty laundry at one time was only aired out in private, but now it seems as if many black people in power seem to think it's OK to air it out in a public venue. (I'm paraphrasing, but you see where this is going)? Anyway, he goes on to say that though certain negative issues about black men are always brought to the forefront, the positive should also be addressed. Agreed. Like I said, just read the article, you'll enjoy it.

But, as it turns out, it's not only issues about black men that need to be addressed. Apparently, some mothers need a good "beat down!"

As it turns out, allegedly a Houston area mother forced her teenage daughter who was five-months pregnant to take an abortion pill. The daughter, 16-year old Carla Perez, wanted to have the baby but her mother told her if she didn't take the pill she would hurt her. Afraid for her own life, young Perez took the pill, which caused her to give birth to a stillborn baby. Here's the kicker. The girl's grandmother buried the fetus in their backyard!

Galena Park police are now searching for the body. Cadaver dogs are also helping police search for the body. As of now, police have not been able to locate the body.

What is our world coming to?!

Starbucks Rocks!

Why is it the little things that make life so great? This morning was the second day in a row that I drove through Starbucks' drive-thru only to find out that they were out of my fave drink. I absolutely crave their grande chai latte, no water, thank you. So, I was deeply annoyed, not only was I not able to get my morning jolt, but I was trapped because there was a car behind me and there was a long line of cars in front of me. The barista picked up I was highly perturbed by the sound of my voice, so she politely suggested that I look over the menu while I wait in line. I have to tell you, I never bother looking at the drinks menu because it's all about the chai latte, thank you. So, what the hell, I decided on the vanilla bean frappuccino. Of course, I had to wait in line, but by the time I got to the window, my frappuccino was ready and the barista wished me a great day and told me my drink was compliments of the house because they were out of the chai. Sweet!!! It's going to be a great day! Cheers!

Who Stole My Cheese?

So, I've been living in Wichita Falls, TX for almost six months now and basically all I do here is work and sleep. Keep in mind that before I moved here I lived in Houston, the 4th largest city in the U.S., where there's diversity, art and culture and a variety of things to do. Well, Wichita Falls is nothing like that. Barely 100-thousand people, less than a 5% African American population, nothing but dry grass for miles and it's a bible belt. Sounds fun, right? Don't get me wrong, the people here are very nice, but I just can't seem do adjust here. This coming from an ex-flight attendant who's lived in various cities, have visited several states and have been all over the world. Still, this town is just not for me. So, why am I here, you might ask? I graduated in December with a B.A. in journalism. In the world of journalism, unfortunately, you have to climb the ladder to success. Not like any other profession, but usually for journalists, that means starting out in a small town to get experience and having to move around until you're in a top 10 market. My predicament, I'm 30-something and most of the people I work with are 20-something, fresh out of school and I have nothing in common with them. Outside of work, everyone is either the age of my grandparents or college age. The ones who are my age, well, they're married with kids. There is an Air Force base here, yet, I still can't seem to meet anyone. So, today I made a decision to just be more outgoing and bolder when it comes to meeting new people. Wish me luck. Damnit! I need it.

There's flawless skin underneath there

I just have to gush about this new product that I've been using for my skin. Since late 2006, I've been having major skin issues... basically a really bad case of adult acne. I chalked it up to stress due to going to school full time and the fact that business was not doing well where I was working at during that time, so I was not making any money, at all. Bills were stacking up and I stressed about how I was going to pay my rent every month. All that completely took a toll on my skin. Anyway, I was doing everything-- full body cleanses, facial masks, taking vitamins, eating healthy, and trying to drink plenty of water. None of that helped. Bottom line, for more than a year my skin continued to get worse and worse and worse. You get the point, right? So, I happened on Neutrogena Advanced Skin Solutions Complete Acne Therapy. It was under $25, and I've spent way more money on products that don't work, so I gave it a shot. Let me tell you, it's wonderful. Immediately I began to see results. You have to use it consistently, or else the breakouts will resurface. But, it has been a miracle worker for me. But the secret weapon is in this little tiny container... Good things do come in small packages. You place this mask that has tiny, little micro beads and salicylic acid on your face for 5 to 10 minutes... I sometimes leave it on as long as 20 minutes, then rinse off and you instantly reveal a new layer of glowing, clearer, smooth skin. But don't take my word; try it for yourself. Purchase it at any local drugstore. Drop me a note to let me know how you like it. Bad skin will soon be a thing in the past. How sexy is that?

Cosmo Anyone?

The count down is on for everyone who used to have "Sacred Sundays" up until 2004. You remember those Sundays... You went out and enjoyed your day until 7 o'clock. And you dared anyone to call or drop by unexpectantly because you were buried in the TV, anticipating what Samantha was going to say, or what fly outfit Carrie was going to wear. Ahhh, those were the nights. You had your girls over and in the spirit of the moment, you knocked back a few bottles of vino. Well, it's all about "girls' night out" again. I know my girls and I have been anticipating the release of this movie since we found out that the movie was in the works. We were planning to celebrate in NYC, but I had a rude awakening today when I checked flight rates and saw that a round trip ticket was $655. That's right, you read it right-- $655. That's a price for a plane ride to Europe and back. I'm sorry, but Mama is not rolling like that, especially for only a 2-day trip. Not going to happen. So everyone will be in Texas for opening night. Save the date: Friday, May 30th. Sex and the City: The Movie . Now, I want ripped abs and sculpted legs and killer arms, but I have to admit I can't stand working out. I do, however, love the end results. So, what's the purpose of this long rant? Well, I'll tell you. But first I have to give you the back story. I'm sorry, I'm writer, and there's always a back story.

This year I was supposed to run the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, but I fell through. In my defense, I was trying to get my hands on a piece of sheep skin... My head was deeply buried in books and papers. Not really an excuse, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Moving on... I've committed to running the marathon again. Half marathon, that is. But what makes this challenge bearable, I, along with one of my best friends and one of my cousins have decided to run it together. So, we've all started training and we've created a support system for each other. My cousin and friend both live in Houston and will be able to train together, however, I'm in North Texas (all alone, but I digress), so I have to find motivation elsewhere. What's my motivation, you may ask? I found a runner's club and I went out and bought new running gear. I'm also looking at running sites. But, let's be real, I just have to get out there and run. I'll keep you posted on my progress... in the mean time, please follow our journey at 3 Runners. This site will give handy tid bits for beginning runners, as well as follow our training and progress. Feel free to comment and offer any advice, tid bit or story if you've ever ran a marathon. We look forward to hearing from you.

Be Careful What You Wish For...

OMG!!! I can't believe it's been over two months since I've posted. But believe me when I tell you that I've been hopelessly busy and totally overwhelmed. At least I had been.

In my last post I wrote about finally finding a job in my field so soon after my college graduation. I was ecstatic and on top of the world. I landed a producer's position for an NBC afilliate and I was finally going to be working in a field I had been dreaming about since high school.. Well, let me tell you, my natural high quickly came to an all-time low weeks after I started. In the first couple of weeks, everyone was totally nice and was quick to help me and answer any questions. But eventually, I felt totally out of my element.

Before I continue, I want to reiterate that this is not a bash on my company or any of co-workers. But, this new job position knocked me on my a$$. I soon realized that I do not know everything and that I have a lot to learn about my industry. Things for me became so out of hand, that I didn't want to go to work. I found myself thinking, "what did I get myself into?" I wanted to tuck my tail in between my legs and bow out. And believe me when I say, I was ready to throw in the towel and go back home to Houston. I still want to go back home to Houston, but that's a whole other story.

So, did things turn around? Yes! I had to do a lot of soul searching and twice as much praying. I wanted to cry in the beginning, but couldn't. Even though crying would have felt good, it wouldn't have helped any. Miraculously, and I do mean miraculously... one day after weeks of praying, everything fell into place. I felt comfortable... I finally felt as though I knew what I was doing and I stopped making the same "stupid" mistakes. Trust me, I'm still learning, and there is plenty more to learn, but let's just say that I'm consciously adequate at my job.

What's next? Nothing but years of success! I'm on my way!

Tiger Woods, watch out...

So.... I was successful in my hunt for shelter in my soon-to-be new town, and boy did I get lucky. (Get your head out of the gutter, not that kind of lucky). I managed to find a two-bedroom apartment with two full baths, W/D connections, a fire place and almost 1000 square feet for less than $700 a month... and it's in an incredible neighborhood. The complex has a fully-equipped, state-of-the-art gym and it's directly across the street from a running trail that wraps around a bayou, and adjacent to the running trail is a golf course. Life is good. OK, I don't know how to play golf but I've been threatening to take golf lessons for the past four years and I've yet to go out to buy a set of clubs. So, needless to say, that will be one of the first things I purchase once I'm settled in my new place. Not only will I take up golf, I will commit to getting ripped abs and sculpted legs. Well, now that I've found a place, I now have to move into it, which is the part I hate. I truly, truly hate moving, but thankfully I have plenty of help. I now have to end this post and return to my mountain of boxes that are taking over my apartment.

Thought of the moment

Do you ever come across something; perhaps you read something or you hear or watch something on TV and there is a message that you needed to hear or read? I've been expecting something for the past 2 weeks and it still hasn't arrived... to say the least, it's very important and I'm tired of waiting. Out of the blue, I just read something online... it read, be patient and wait on the Lord. I have to say, it really gave me peace. So, I'm going to do just that... His autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, so it's still unclear whether his death is a suicide or accidental overdose... time will tell. I was not a fan of Heath, in the sense that I didn't run out to watch every movie he played in, and I think I'm the only person in America who hasn't seen Brokeback Mountain. But, I do know he was a well-respected actor and he was one of very few actors who seemed to not have an ego. He was low-key, seemed grounded and he even chose to live in Brooklyn, instead of Hollywood or smack dab in the heart of New York City. Though I'm sure his family and friends are certainly mourning his death, what's really sad is that he left behind a 2-year-old daughter. It's just so sad when kids are left without a parent or parents at such an early age. Anyway, I just felt compelled to give my respects to a young talent who has definitely left the earth too soon. He seemed to have so much going for him, but you never know what's going on with a person in their private life.

On that road again

Just one month after graduating and I've managed to land a job as a morning news producer for a small NBC affiliate in North Texas. Not too shabby. It's an entry-level position, but it is just what it is... a stepping stone into the career I've always dreamed of entering. I'm heading out later this week to go apartment hunting. That's always exciting (do you sense my sarcasm)? But, my new colleagues have been very helpful informing me which apartments to check out and which neighborhoods and communities to stay away from. Although my job position is entry-level, which means, I will be making very little money, the cost of living in this small market is extremely cheap. So, even though I'll be earning chump change, I'll appear to be balling because I won't have to part with much money. Anyway, more to come on the apartment search and my move.

Oh yeah... my first day on the new j.o.b is Feb. 3... Superbowl Sunday. I should be upset, but since the Packers nor the Colts are in the championship, I could care less if I miss it or not. Not a Giants fan, and even though I'm indifferent about the Pats, I'm a little bored with them. It will be funny, though, if they went undefeated and then finally lose... to the Giants. BTW-- is it possible to be a fan of one brother, but dislike his kid brother? Is it just me, or do you find Eli just a little annoying? But I guess he wasn't too far off having his girlfriend sit in the freezing cold at one of the most important games of his career, huh? She deserves 10-carats for that act of bravery.

The Grad

I know it's been a while since my last post, but so much has happened in the last few weeks. As you can tell from the picture on the left, I finally graduated. After returning back to school after sooooo many years away from classrooms, lectures and exams, I received my BA in Journalism (YEAH!!!) and I'm so excited. My parents and extended family were in the stands cheering my on, although I couldn't spot them (20/100 eyesight)... but they all assured me they were screaming my name. One of my cousins even lost her voice; when she called me the next morning, I could barely hear her (how sweet). Anyway, my graduation was a blast. After the ceremony, my family joined me and my parents back at my place for a couple of bowls of delicious gumbo that my mom cooked, cake, gifts and good-ole family bonding. The following day I had a celebratory dinner at one of my favorite restaurants and on the following Sunday, I did absolutely nothing. Let me tell you, that felt great. So now I'm a college graduate and I'm totally ecstatic about my accomplishments. Now, I need a job. So, now one chapter has closed in my life and another has begun. This blog may turn into a journal about me seeking employment. I'm also ready to leave Houston, so that's a little tricky trying to find employment in another state when I'm still here in the big H, but I'd like to think I'm resourceful enough to make it happen. Coming up next... my voyage to a new monthly salary. Wish me luck!

I'm Back!

Hello everyone,
I've been M.I.A. but I'm back and ready to write. I just want to defend myself and say that leaving out black, male authors was not intentional. I love to read and I will read anyone's work if it's really good. So, please, if anyone has any male authors of any race or ethnicity, please feel free to share. And please, stay tuned for more "Thoughts on Paper."

Smooches!

A Question of Class

I came across this article by Keith Boykin. On a personal note, I just have not met a man who wants to settle down, get married and have children. Again, I stress that's my reason for not being married. I will admit, as of late I have not been getting out as often as I should because it's pretty hard to meet someone sitting on my living room sofa. So, I guess my advice for all the single, 30-something black women is to get off your sofa and make yourselves available to meet new men. I can also say that I've always dreamed of being married to a terrific man who will father my children and even though I'm not married, yet, I still hold on to that dream because I know when the time is right, I'll meet someone I'm compatible with, fall in love and marry.

As for the single, black women who have made the all-too-familiar comment: "I don't need a man," I have to think back to the conversation Dr. Robin Smith had with Tom Joyner on the Tom Joyner Show. Most of you know Dr. Robin from the Oprah Winfrey Show who has been a guest on her show numerous times. In the conversation, Dr. Robin said she's counseled women who believe they don't need a man for various reasons, all of which were quite interesting. She explained that a lot of single women witnessed their mother's abusive relationships and harbor that burden and as a consequence they're afraid of having that same kind of relationship with a man and simply choose to stay single. Another reason she gave is that many women have been mistreated in all their past relationships and are afraid of getting hurt. Again, because of this, they opt to live a single life. Another interesting argument that I can't say I would agree with, but interesting nonetheless, is that some women who grew up as an only child have what's called the "only-child syndrome." Meaning, these women grew up lonely as a child and end up living lonely lives as an adult.

To address why there are so many African American singles past the age of thirty... This morning I watched Meet The Press (I know I should have been at church, but I digress) and Bill Cosby and Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint, noted psychiatrist and tenured professor at Harvard University, were today's guests. Cosby and Poussaint are co-authors of the book titled, Come On People. The book discusses many controversial topics which Cosby and Poussaint addressed on the show.

One of the subjects discussed was the high percentage of African American women who have never been married. The reasons were mind blowing. Both men stated that the reason was the lack of available upstanding black men. Most black men are either incarcerated or dead. In a recent census of the U.S. jail systems, there are 2.2 million men jailed or imprisoned. Of those 2.2 million men, 910 thousand of these men are African American!

The men who are not incarcerated are too busy killing each other. I can't recall the exact numbers they gave but it was more than 40 percent of black-on-black crime and Baltimore had the highest percentage of this heinous crime. They also stated that most of these incarcerated black men came from single-parent homes and are high school drop outs. Dr. Poussaint mentioned that years ago most people met their respective spouses in college, however, he said that's nearly impossible these days because black women in college out number black men in college 2 to 1. Cosby stated that most black children (and this is no secret) grow up in one-parent homes, have no father or father figure, have not witnessed a loving relationship between a man and a women because they don't come from a two-parent home and they've never even attended a wedding. All of these points he mentioned are a missing link in the lives of black children.

Besides the reason that most black men are either imprisoned or dead, it's possible that most black women are single because of the available "upstanding" black men who are available, they tend to want to date outside of their race. I see it constantly, black men today would rather date a white, Asian, Hispanic or anyone else who is not a black women. Again, that it is something that I cannot address because I don't know why these men have made a choice to date outside of their race. I can say that it's upsetting because not only do they choose to date outside their race, they disrepsect black women to these women who are not black. I don't know about the other black women out there, but I have never heard a white man disrespect a white woman or call her out of her name in front of me. But, as I stated before, I can only speak for myself. I love black men and I prefer to be with a black man and I would prefer to marry a black man. So for all the black men who happen to read this: please treat us (black women) with a little more respect and try not to trip over us while racing to talk to a woman who just happens to be not black. In fact, next time stop to say hello. We want to talk to you!

What about your friends?

I know, I know, I borrowed the line from TLC, but what about them? Why are friendships so hard, sometimes? For the most part, our friends are the people who are the easiest to be ourselves around. They're the people we can talk to about any and everything. And if they're your best friend, you can usually call them at 3 o'clock in the morning without getting cussed out... usually. What's really special about friends is that they're the people we choose to be a part of our life... an extension of ourselves. Our friends share the same interests, like to do the sames things and usually know what we're thinking without anything being said. We can sit around with our friends to talk and laugh about menial things. Our friends are the ones we call first to share good news, they're the first we call when we're having a hard time or need a shoulder to cry on. And they're definitely the ones we call for a dose of honesty. A real friend always tells you the truth. But sometimes friendships, like romantic relationships, can be strained. Yes, friendships can be hard and require work. And no matter how old the friendship is, there are times when things can get awkward or someone in the relationship starts to annoy you in some way. However, just because trouble can occur in a friendship, it's usually not a reason to dissolve it. Communication is key in ALL relationships, meaning the most trivial things need to be addressed. Though there may be times when a friend or friends can be toxic. If that is the case, then that relationship would need to be evaluated. I, for one, do not believe in having toxic relationships and when I discover a relationship of any kind is toxic, I immediately end it. However, our true friends; our "ace boons," our "road dogs," "our girls" and/or "our boys" are the ones we hold dearest to our hearts. There comes a time when we have to decide just how much we love our friends and overlook their shortcomings, and let's face it, we all have them because none of us are perfect. I guess my point is that real friendships are hard to come by. Sure there are times when people have come into our lives for a season and at some point we never see or hear from those people again. And granted, we all change and grow, but that's expected. Like all living things, we continue to grow. But the connection or "it factor" that caused us to bond with our friends never changes. We have to treasure our friends and never take them for granted. And we must learn to accept them for who they are. And if you've never expressed to your friends how much they mean to you or how much you love them, do so today because tomorrow is not promised. Friendships are going to encounter hardships, but a true friendship is worth working on and saving.

Overdose of Love Making

OK, I'm a little late, but I've been so busy and so tired. It's no secret 41-year-old Halle Berry is pregnant with her first child, but it wasn't easy for the the Oscar-winning actress. Yesterday she told Oprah that she and her new beau, Gabriel Aubry, of two years had been trying... a lot! She said finally after about 35 pregnancy tests, all of which turned up negative, she FINALLY got a positive. Berry is 3-months pregnant but she will not find out the sex of her baby until her delivery day. "There's so few genuine surprises in life anymore that, why not have a huge surprise?" she told Oprah. "And I like fantasizing one day it's a girl, one day it's a boy." I totally agree. Berry also told Oprah that she and Aubry do not plan to marry but she "feels more married in a way" than she ever had in her two previous marriages. She also said that their "spiritual connection is much more important than the pomp and circumstance and the ceremony." Well, I can't really say that I totally agree with her there, but hey, to each his own. Still, I'm extremely happy for Miss Berry and I hope she and Aubry have a beautiful and healthy baby. But how could they not... she and her boyfriend are gorgeous!

(Photo Courtesy of the AP press)

Bruised But Not Broken

This could possibly be the break-up song of the year. Sure you can have a brief pity party, take everything he/she ever got for you and set a match to it, rip up all the pictures of your ex and indulge in a pint of Haagen-Dazs (my favorite is Blue Bell, but that's just me). Then, my dears, pick yourself up and start to live again. Truth be told, he/she just wasn't the one for you and there is always someone much better out there!

Don't Have a Skinny Goat Mentality

I'm sure most of you have heard the phrase, "you get back what you put out." When you hear that phrase, you may think back to when your mom told you to treat people the way you want to be treated. Guess what? Mom was right! However, you can get back so much more if you are putting out positive energy. We treat other people right because as a human being that's what we're supposed to do and in return, we get it back tenfolds. I use this example because everyone is able to relate to it. But, continuing to put out positive energy into the universe can bring you a lifetime of prosperity, abundance and happiness. The universe can be translated in many ways. Some refer to it as just that, the universe, others consider it the holy ghost or the holy spirit, while others just consider God. If you continue to think negative and pronounce negativity over your life, then guess what? You're going to continue to have negative experiences. So, I challenge everyone today to stop walking around with a "skinny goat mentality." Stop hanging around toxic people (because remember, misery loves company), stop declaring you'll never prosper or you'll never be able to afford the finer things in life. And by all means, do not think that where ever you are in your life today is where you are supposed to be. In other words, do not accept complacency. Declare everything you want out of life... be it a high paying career, a big house on a lake, a spouse and 2.5 children, perfect health, to lose that extra ten pounds or that BMW you've been eyeing for years.

Here are some helpful hints to help you achieve what you want and to keep you on the right path:

1. Journal-- think of all the things you want to accomplish or what you want out of life and write it down. It always helps to refer back to it later as a reminder. Once you've done that, write down how you plan to achieve it. (Let's face it, you have to work for what you want in life).

2. Affirmations-- Look at yourself in the mirror every morning and tell yourself "today is going to be a wonderful day", tell yourself "you are a wonderful person and that you deserve all the good things that are coming your way". Eventually, you will believe this because guess what? It's the truth!

3. Manifestations-- Think of the career you want, the house you want to live in, the car you want to drive, the trip you want to take or whatever it is you want. Then, close your eyes and visualize yourself in the experience.

4. ONLY surround yourself with positive people... people who want the same things in life as you do, people who have the same goals and interests as you do.

5. Wake up happy and excited about what this day is going to bring. Be excited about your life and only expect great things will come your way.

HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!

Proud Mama!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_15337d2lH8A/Rv7Hq6fdGLI/AAAAAAAAADk/0z7Bbw-sGEw/s320/laceybum1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115745766809082034" />
No, I'm not a mother, yet. Not a bad kick to be on, don't you agree? Well, thanks to another one of my favorite blog sites, it was brought to my attention that Amy DuBois Barnett, former editor-in-chief of Teen People, just released her new book, Get Yours! The Girlfriends' Guide to Having Everything You Ever Dreamed of and More. It's a guide to inspire you to overcome your fears and to not only pursue your goals, but to achieve them. I first became familiar with Barnett when she was the EIC of Honey Magazine. I enjoyed reading her editor's letter to the readers section and just from reading her words, she seemed so down-to-earth and genuine. It was almost like she was speaking directly to me. There was always a picture to accompany her passage in which she always looked so classy and stylish. Then, I learned that the beautiful and successful woman also has a beautiful mind to boot. Barnett received her B.A. from Brown University and an MFA from Columbia University. She also worked on Wall Street before starting her career in the field of journalism. I also just learned that her mother, Marguerite Ross Barnett, was the first black woman president of my soon-to-be alma mater, the University of Houston. Talk about your six degrees of separation. As someone who is definitely "going for hers" and knows that I can truly have it all, I think Barnett's life experiences and success is a trustworthy model to follow. So run out to your local Barnes & Noble or log onto Amazon and buy the book!

Live Your Dream!

I just began reading The Women of Brewster Place and I came across the poem by Langston Hughes, ...A Dream Deferred, which is also at the beginning of the play, A Raisin in the Sun. At the moment I read it, it resonated something in me and it made me realize that I have just began to truly live my dream. I'm a prime example that it is never too late to go after what you want in life. Though I won't divulge my true age, I can tell you that I am a young, thirty-something woman. I've held just about every job you can possibly imagine and yet, I never felt fulfilled. I decided two years ago to go back to school to complete my degree in journalism and I'm proud to say I'll be graduating in December. I say this with the most sincerity, if I can do it, anybody can. I won't pretend it was easy, because the last few months have been pretty difficult going to school full time. However, I have a strong support system and loving parents who want to see me succeed. I challenge everyone who reads this post to step out on faith and go after your dreams because we only live once and we might as well live it doing something we love and that makes us feel good. Whether it's backpacking around the world, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro or writing your memoirs, make a decision today to "Make it Happen!"

What Happens to a Dream Deferred?

Does it dry up

like a raisin in the sun?

Or fester like a sore--

And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

Or crust and sugar over

like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags

like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

--Langston Hughes

Search for Chicago woman could come to an end

The search for a 28-year old pharmaceutical rep who has been missing for more than a week could soon come to an end. The body of the woman has not been positively identified.

The Struggle for the Jena 6 Continues

The lone, black teenager jailed for the beating of a white classmate was released today on $45,000 bail. Seventeen-year old Mychal Bell was facing 15 years in prison for aggravated second-degree battery but prosecutor Reed Walters has decided to lower the sentence. Instead, Bell could be held until his 21st birthday if he is found guilty in a juvenile court. I'm still perplexed as to why none of the white students, who hung nooses on the "all-white students' tree," are not facing any criminal charges because the last time I checked, the hanging of nooses is a hate crime. I would also like to know why black Americans (as well as other minorities) have to continue to fight for equal rights and justice, yet our commander-in-chief continues to send our young men off to fight a senseless war in Iraq for their democracy. Not once have I heard George W. Bush address this heinous act in Jena. Honestly, I am not one to scream racism, but I find myself agreeing more and more with Kanye West's comment made in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. After two years, the people of New Orleans are still unable to return home because they have no home to return to, but he continues to try to rebuild Iraq... It's "1964" all over again in Jena, La., but Bush has decided to ignore that, as well. Am I the only one who feels like this?

(Photo courtesy of AP press. from l to r: Rev. Al Sharpton, Mychal Bell, Pastor T.D. In route to my boot camp class this morning, I listened to him on the Tom Joyner Show talking about the movie. He says working on the movie was intense and that it was a learning experience for him. The movie was filmed primarily in Phoenix, but he said parts were filmed in Dubai and Abu Ghraib. Jamie was so taken by the people in the Middle East that he suggested "everyone go out and get a passport and visit somebody else's country." He also stated that there are a lot of misconceptions about the Middle East and it's people. So, grab your favorite movie buddy and check out the movie. He promised the movie will not disappoint.

Black Americans are thinking for themselves...

I gasp a heavy sigh as I'm writing this. Unless you've been hiding out with Osama in a cave somewhere, I'm sure you've read or heard about Bill O'Reilly's latest idiotic gaffe. Apparently, FOX's favorite far-right winger had dinner with Al Sharpton at Harlem's iconic Sylvia's restaurant earlier this week. If you've never visited Harlem, Sylvia's is a popular soul food restaurant on Lenox Avenue (probably the most well-known soul food restaurant in the country) and has been there since 1962. Bill was so impressed with his Sylvia's experience that he decided to share it with his syndicated talk show audience. I'm not sure what black people Bill has been hanging around or maybe his only image of black America is from watching old Tarzan movies, or maybe he's watched Boyz n the Hood too many times... but he just couldn't fathom that dining at a black-owned restaurant patronized by predominantly black folks is like dining at any other restaurant in New York. "I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship," O'Reilly said. IMAGINE THAT? Can someone please tell him that the correct term is patronage not patronship? God only knows what his expectations were; for all we know he was probably wishing he would have donned a bullet-proof vest. He later told FOX news contributor Juan Williams, "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's screaming: MF-er, I want more tea." My guess is that he thinks Barack Obama is the only articulate black person walking around in America. He continued saying, "...they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn't any kind of craziness at all." WOW! But, just when you think he couldn't say anything else stupid, he commented, "I think black Americans are starting to think more and more for themselves. They're getting away from the Sharptons and the Jacksons and the people trying to lead them into a race-based culture. They're just trying to figure it out. 'Look, I can make it. If I work hard and get educated, I can make it.'' News flash Bill, this is 2007 not 1807. Perhaps someone can give him a crash course in "The Advancement of Black People 101." Any takers?

Good information worth sharing

I just had to get the word out about this sensational product I stumbled upon while reading a post from one of my new fave blogs, Style Ammo. According to her post, she was at an African Arts Festival in Brooklyn searching for skin products and noticed a 40'ish woman with beautiful, baby-smooth skin. When she asked the woman what she used on her skin, she was directed to Oshun face and body scrub. According to my fellow blogger, she swears she had "incredibly clear skin" after using it for only one week. So you know I immediately clicked on the website to find it, right! I have been struggling with severe acne for the last six months, and for a 30-something-year old woman, that just isn't sexy. Needless to say I ordered the product immediately because I'm tired of walking around looking like a spotted leopard. Having to wear make-up just to go to the grocery store is getting old. So, now I'm waiting impatiently for my god-send of a product to arrive. I promise to deliver a testimony as soon as I see results.

The Sexiest Bachelor, Ever?

It might be safe to say that I'm in love with this season's new "Bachelor." Brad Womack is a 34-year old self-made millionaire, but that's not what I find so attractive about him... although that doesn't hurt. Not only is he extremely handsome, he's a true southern guy from Austin, TX with down-home southern manners to match. He's also a hardworking, blue collar worker at heart. In the intro of tonight's show he said that he is ready to get down on one knee and propose to the woman of his dreams. Well, didn't he know all he had to do was come to Houston and find me? So far, some of these women, maybe even most of the women, appear to be a little too desparate. I'm also a little annoyed with the ONLY black woman on the show who introduced herself as "Miss Brown Shuga." Come on already! We get one black woman to represent us on the show and she says some ignorant garbage like that. Her real name is Rigina (sic) and she's an account representative from San Diego, so I know she's able to say something a little wittier than that. Anyway, why does ABC opt to put a black woman on the show when she's never given a rose? I don't know, maybe she's there strictly for the "experience." Well, I could go on and on about that, so I digress. Stay tuned for more The Bachelor updates. I can't wait to see which women are going to receive a rose.

It's a Girl for Salma Hayek!

The gorgeous, 41-year old, Mexican-born actress and executive producer of hit show Ugly Betty gave birth to a brand new baby girl Friday. The 29-year old suffered a neck injury when he collided into the Colts' Roy Hall at Sunday's game.

During the second quarter, many fans looked on quietly as Killings lay on the field while being treated by team doctors, with many players, both Texans and Colts, kneeling in prayer. Though he was able to visually see his hands and fingers move, he told coach Gary Kubiak that he couldn't feel anything down low.

"Initially he made a couple of comments that he couldn't feel down low," said Kubiak in a statement to the Houston Chronicle. "As he lay there and talked to us, he did move everything."

Visiting teammates said Killings was "chilling, smiling, laughing and feeling fine."

Killings' injury was a little too familiar to the NFL just two weeks after Bills' tight end Kevin Everett suffered a major spinal cord injury.

Everett, who is now undergoing treatment at Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital, is not yet walking but has gained minor movement in his arms and fingers.

The Texans, who made franchise history by winning two season-opener games in a row, lost to the Colts 24-30. Although not a victory on the field, they definitely have something to celebrate said Texans veteran defensive end N.D. Kalu in a statement to the Houston Chronicle.

"It feels like a victory right now — not a victory on the field, but a victory in life."

(Photo courtesy of the AP press)

New Fall TV Season

OK, I will admit I'm a self-proclaimed TV junkie and I am so psyched about this fall's new TV line up. Of course, favorites like Grey's Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters, Girlfriends (I hear Jill Marie Jones "Toni Childs" will make an appearance this season), ANTM and Dancing with the Stars will be back. But perhaps the most anticipated show debuting this season is the premiere of CBS's Cane. The Duques are an immigrant family from Cuba who went from rags to riches producing and selling sugar; hence the title, Cane. It's a show about family and betrayal, sort of like the Latin version of Dynasty; filled with drama, love, sex and dare I say it, incest. Jimmy Smits makes his come back portraying Alejandro Duque, the adopted son of the patriarch of the Duques. Here's the kicker... he's married to his adopted sister. Should be interesting. There's other familiar faces such as Hector Elizondo, Chicago Hope and Rita Moreno, West Side Story. Nonetheless, I look forward to watching a show with Latin flavor starring a lot of beautiful people... Jimmy Smits makes me drool! Cane premieres on CBS Tuesday, September 25 at 9pm central standard time. Unfortuately, I'll be in class from 7-10pm but thank goodness for podcasts. Happy viewing!

Welcome to my page!

Hello everyone! I'm someone who's more comfortable expressing myself on paper and like most people, I feel I have something to say. Some may agree, many may disagree, but hey that's the beauty of freedom of speech and freedom of the press, right? I'm a southern girl from Louisiana, now living in Texas, who's traveled all around the world and throughout the States. So far, I've lived my life to the fullest and I've had wonderful experiences but I'm not finished living, yet. I'm an aspiring writer who likes to write about any and everything with big dreams of becoming a best-selling novelist and a sought-after screenwriter. I enjoy reading, writing, good food, fine wine, listening to good music and looking at all things beautiful. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about my thoughts on paper and I hope you tell your friends about my page. Until next time, have a wonderful day!
